Decorative concrete in Eureka CA - a finish that suits the slab underneath it

Plain, worn or tired concrete you'd like to look better? We check the slab first, then help you pick a stamped pour or overlay.

Can my old concrete look better, or does it need replacing?

Decorative concrete in Eureka gives a flat slab like a patio, walk or driveway a finished look beyond plain gray, and it comes down to two jobs, a new pour with a pattern pressed in or a thin topping bonded over the slab you already have, with room to combine techniques on one surface.

Most folks who call me have a patio or walk that works fine but looks tired, or one that's chipped and uneven, and they aren't sure which kind they've got. What moves the price is how much area you're covering, whether the old slab has to come out first and how involved the pattern and color get. The schedule turns mostly on that same tear-out question and on the wait before new concrete can be sealed, and your written estimate lays out your own job. If you already know you want a new patterned pour, our page on stamped concrete goes into it.

How we do decorative concrete, from the slab up

I look your slab over closely before we talk about patterns or color, because its condition decides whether you're getting a new stamped pour or a thin topping over what's there. For a new pour, our crew breaks out the old concrete, digs out and packs the subgrade, which is the soil and gravel the slab sits on, and checks where your water runs so the slab falls away from the house. Then we pour, press the pattern in while the concrete is still fresh and finish it. For an overlay, we clean and prep the old slab so the topping grabs hold, then lay the new surface down. The base is the part you won't see once it's done, and it's usually the first thing people want to trim from a budget, but I'd rather you go simpler on the pattern than skimp underneath, because a fancy finish on a poor base cracks and sinks right along with the dirt.

Some decorative jobs lean on other work. If the patio you want sits against a slope, a concrete retaining wall can hold that ground back so the slab has steady footing. And if the surface you're picturing is a floor inside, we'd start with concrete floor installation so there's a sound slab to work from.

Decorative concrete and street-side work in Eureka

If any part of your job reaches into the public right-of-way, such as the sidewalk strip or driveway apron by the street, the City of Eureka's Engineering Department issues an encroachment permit for it first. The city won't issue that permit until it accepts the insurance documents, and work in that strip only starts once the permit's been issued. Addresses outside the Eureka city limits fall under Humboldt County instead, so for the rest of your project we ask the office that covers your address whether a permit is needed. When one is, we handle the paperwork with you and start early, since some of it takes time.

Around Eureka we see plenty of older patios and walks that are worn on top but still solid, and just as many that have settled or cracked through, so I don't assume an overlay will work until I've seen yours. We're based in Eureka and work in the cities around it, and we run into the same mix on jobs in Arcata and McKinleyville.

How decorative concrete works

  1. Call or send the form

Call us or use the form and tell us a little about the surface. We set a time for me to come out to your place.

  2. I look at your slab

I check the slab and where your water runs before we talk about looks, and I answer whatever you ask. You get a written estimate that says whether your slab calls for a new pour or an overlay, what's included and what's driving the cost.

  3. We check permits and schedule

Before anything is scheduled, we check whether the city or the county covers your address. If part of the job is in the public right-of-way, work there waits for the city's permit.

  4. We work, then walk it

Our crew does the work with me on site. When it's done, we walk it together so you can point out anything you want looked at.

Questions before you book decorative concrete

How much does decorative concrete cost in Eureka?

The price comes from the size of the area, whether your old slab can stay or has to come out, and how involved the pattern and color are. Tear-out and new base work add the most, while an overlay on a sound slab skips both. I'll give you a written estimate after I see the slab, so you're working from your own job and not a guess.

How do I know if my concrete slab can take a decorative overlay?

Your slab can take an overlay if it's structurally sound and a topping can bond to it. If it's heaving, settling or cracked all the way through, a topping won't fix that, and the slab needs to come out for a new pour. That's the first thing I check, because it decides which job you're planning for.

How long does stamped concrete need to cure before it's sealed?

Stamped concrete has to cure, meaning finish its slow hardening, before any sealer goes on, and how long that takes varies with the curing method, the air temperature, the humidity and the mix. Sealer put on too early or too heavy can leave the surface looking wrong, so it's fair to ask any contractor when they plan to seal. Most stamped work gets a film-forming sealer, the kind that sits on top, because it brings the color out.

How often does stamped concrete need to be resealed?

Reseal stamped concrete when it needs it, not on a set number of years. The signs are water and spills no longer beading off, or the color looking flat and losing its depth. Resealing is the most common upkeep stamped concrete asks for.

How long will I be off my patio or driveway after a decorative pour?

You stay off a new pour until it has cured enough for foot traffic, and a driveway needs longer still before a car goes on it. An overlay on a slab you're keeping skips the tear-out, which usually shortens the time you're without it. I'll tell you when it's ready to walk on and when it's ready to drive on, because that turns on the mix and the conditions that week.

Will a new stamped slab crack like my old one did?

Concrete can still crack, but a well-built slab stays flat and cracks where we planned for it. Besides a poor base, the usual cause is control joints, the cut lines that give a slab a set place to crack, being cut late or skipped. We cut them on time, and I'll show you where they'll go before the pour.

Why Eureka homeowners call Eureka Concrete for decorative concrete

  • The owner gives your estimate

I come out myself to look at the job, and I'm on site with our crew while the work gets done. You deal with one person who knows your slab from the first look to the last walk, and no question is too small to ask me.

  • Learned the trade on Eureka crews

I learned concrete working on crews around Eureka, then came back to it and started this business in 2023 because I missed building things people stand on every day. That's why I care most about the base, the drainage and the joints you won't see once the finish is down.

  • Fully licensed and insured

We're fully licensed and insured. California licenses this kind of flat concrete work under its concrete contractor classification, so it's worth asking anyone you hire about their license.

On a decorative job, the slab underneath matters more than the pattern on top, so the place to start is a look at yours. Call (707) 572-3701 or send us a note to set that up.

  • Concrete retaining walls

When the patio or walk you have in mind sits against a slope, a wall holding that ground back keeps soil from pushing on your new slab.

  • Concrete floor installation

If the surface you want to dress up is a floor inside a garage, shop or addition, it starts with a new, sound slab poured and finished right.
